Understanding Dementia & Alzheimer's

Dementia is not a single disease; it is an umbrella term describing a range of symptoms associated with a decline in memory, reasoning, or other thinking skills severe enough to reduce a person's ability to perform everyday activities. Alzheimer's disease is the most common cause, accounting for 60% to 80% of cases. Vascular dementia, caused by microscopic brain bleeding or blood vessel blockage, is the second most common type.

Our Diagnostic & Care Approach

1. Standardized Cognitive & Memory Screening

We administer validated cognitive tests (such as the MMSE and MoCA) along with neuropsychological evaluations to objectively assess memory, language, focus, and abstract thinking.

2. Neuroimaging & Exclusion Scans

We use brain MRI and metabolic PET scans to look for specific patterns of brain changes and rule out treatable causes of memory loss, such as normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) or vitamin deficiencies.

3. Pharmacotherapy and Symptom Management

We prescribe cholinesterase inhibitors (e.g., donepezil, rivastigmine) and NMDA receptor antagonists (memantine) to help regulate neurotransmitters and support cognitive function, alongside managing associated behavioral changes.

4. Caregiver Support & Counseling

Caring for a patient with dementia is demanding. We provide families with counseling on communication strategies, safety adjustments in the home, and preparing for the progressive stages of memory loss.
